I've given up one of my 'little secrets' that I use when some friend tells me they want a decent preamp at low cost. By adjust the remote sensor volume to max, I was able to get maximum volume out of the unit and drive the power section very nicely. But the switches are of a quality that only gets put on premium gear, these days. I was able to use an universal remote control that I have, a Radio Shack Kameleon 6 in one remote control which I was able to program to run the audio portion of the Kenwood KC 206 control preamp. The switches usually need a bit of cleaning. Re-building these units (which are available for about $75 on ebay) creates a fabulous sounding unit-for the effort and money. The only flaw is a tone circuit that cannot be switched out. Also, the Nikko Beta II and Beta I, (possibly the Beta 40 as well) with a Noble brand plastic film stepped attenuator (now a $150 item, and simply not available),and IIRC.single ended class 'A' circuitry, discrete phono amplifier and capacitor coupled circuitry.
